Like all other chemical peels, Jessner peel is doing by rubbing an acidic liquid over the skin to remove the top layers and promote the growth of new, younger-looking skin.
How can Jessner’s peel benefit your skin?
Here chemical peels have been gaining popularity in recent years as skin rejuvenation treatments, but they have been using beauty treatments since ancient Egyptian times.
Jessner’s shell was first formulated over a hundred years ago and is still used today thanks to its ability to:
- reduce dark spots and age spots
- even out skin tone
- reduce the appearance of scars
- smooth fine lines and wrinkles
- treat melasma (skin discoloration), hyperpigmentation, and acne scars
While many chemical peels can cause long-lasting discoloration on darker skin, a recent small study found that a modified Jessner solution safely and effectively reduces melasma and pigment blemishes on darker skin.
How does the Jessner peel work?
- The Jessner Peel works by removing the upper layers of skin to reveal smoother, more even-toned skin underneath.
- The depth to which the peel penetrates depends on the type of chemical peel done: superficial, medium, or profound.
- The Jessner peel is typically a medium peel, which removes cells from the top layer of the skin, the epidermis, and the upper part of the middle layer, the dermis.
- Though it can be used as a superficial peel, which has a faster healing time, it needs to be done more often to get a deeper peel.
- Regardless of depth, the peel comprises a mixture of lactic acid, salicylic acid, and resorcinol in a 95 percent ethanol solution.
- Due to some concerns about the safety of resorcinol, there are also Jessner exfoliation solutions made without it.
- Jessner’s answer is also frequently added to other exfoliation solutions to increase its effectiveness on scars and pigmentation.
How to Prepare for a Jessner Peel?
Before you have a Jessner peel in the office, schedule an appointment with your doctor.
- Before scheduling a peel, your doctor will ask you questions about your skin and medical history to ensure you don’t have any medications or conditions that would prevent you from having a chemical peel like Jessner’s.
Skincare plan before the expulsion:
- Your doctor may ask you to shadow a particular skincare plan for two to four weeks before peeling to reduce side effects and make the peel more effective.
- It may include using a retinol or Retin-A cream or gel to thin the top layer of the skin, increase cell turnover, and help the exfoliation penetrate deeper into the skin.
- Retinol is usually suspended for at least a few days before peeling to avoid excessive skin irritation during treatment.
What to expect during the procedure?
Chemical peels are usually done in the dermatologist’s office. The doctor will begin by cleaning the skin thoroughly to remove oil or products.
They can also cover your eyes with tape, glasses, gauze, or pomade and protect your hair if you treat your face.
By a medium peel, you may have the option of taking a sedative or pain reliever to make the procedure more comfortable.
The peel is applying with gauze, a brush, or a cotton-tipped applicator. The treated skin will begin to look frosty and white. You may feel burning or stinging.
After three to five minutes, the doctor will remove the peel and apply a cold compress and lotion to soothe the skin.
Side effects of chemical peel:
- Although everyone will experience some side effects from exfoliation, complications are common among people with darker skin tones. Source of confidence.
- redness and swelling
- itching or burning
- Rare complications include:
- permanent darkening or lightening of the skin
- scars or infections
What to expect after a peel?
- After exfoliation, the skin may continue to burn or itch for 20 minutes or more. Your skin will be red, swollen, then tight for the first 24 hours or so.
- Later that, the swelling will go down, and your skin will start to peel.
- The skin may darken or even develop brown spots during this time, but the areas rarely remain after the skin has healed.
- Once the skin begins to peel off, a new smooth leather will be revealing.
- Here it can take five to seven days after a medium peel to develop new skin, and the redness can last for months in some cases.
- Usually, it will take 7 to 14 days to heal and see the full results of the peel fully.
- However, the results are not permanent. Your skin will last to age with time, and sun exposure acne can create new scars, and new hyperpigmentation spots can develop.
